Make sure you use correct social security numbers

It's that time of year when we're filling out tax returns, either electronically or on paper. This year it's more important than ever to check that all the social security numbers you enter on the return are correct.

You should check two things:

First, make sure there are no mistakes in the social security numbers you enter for yourself, your spouse, and all dependents.

Second, make sure that the name and number for each person agrees exactly with that person's social security card.

This year the IRS will check all names and numbers against social security records. If they don't match exactly, you'll receive a letter from the IRS requesting an explanation. They won't process the return or issue a tax refund until the mismatch is corrected. And remember, the IRS will not let you claim a dependent without a social security number.

Contact the Social Security Administration if you're using a different legal name than that on your social security card. This frequently occurs as the result of marriage or divorce. Until you correct the record, your tax refund could be on hold at the IRS.
