What medical deductions can you take?
The IRS has specifically identified hundreds of items taxpayers
may deduct as medical expenses. It has also identified many items that are not deductible.
The following lists include only a few of those items mentioned by the IRS. We have included those we feel are
of special interest, fairly new to the tax law, or just plain interesting.
From the IRS list of deductible medical expenses:
- Acupuncture
- Air conditioner for specific medical relief
- Treatment for alcoholism
- Contact lenses and the insurance premiums for replacement
- Disposable diapers for neurological disease
- Health club dues prescribed by physician for medical condition
- Indian medicine man
- Long-term care insurance (within limits)
- Lead paint removal
- Mattress prescribed for arthritis
- Plumbing fixtures for handicapped
- Reclining chair for cardiac patient
- Program to stop smoking
- Weight loss program for treatment of special disease
From the IRS list of nondeductible medical expenses:
- Salary of a chauffeur
- Clothing which is suitable for use other than therapy
- General diaper services
- Dust elimination service
- Electrolysis
- Hair transplants
- Health club dues not related to a medical condition
- Maternity clothes
- Loss on the sale of residence when moving for medical reason
- Spiritual guidance
- Vacations to restore health
Please keep in mind that this is a very small part of the
IRS list of medical deductions.
