Tax Tip of the Week

Doing your own tax return can be expensive

There is more to consider when preparing your tax return than the amount you will owe the IRS for a given year.

For many people, any number of the new tax return computer programs will prepare a satisfactory tax return. But what about the returns that have something out of the ordinary? And what about the nontax financial matters that affect you during the year?

Even if you normally do your own returns, you would probably enlist the help of a professional in any year when you had unusual tax transactions. But do you realize that even when your tax matters are routine, there are other financial matters that should be addressed? Your income tax return serves as a window into your financial world.

The preparation of your tax return should raise questions about the nature of your investments, your retirement finances, your insurance needs, and funding for special events such as your children's college education. Depending on the complexity of your affairs, you could have any number of nontax concerns that need an annual review.

The preparation of your tax return should be more than just an exercise to see how much is left over after you pay the government. You should be the primary beneficiary of your hard work. Let us help you keep more of what you make. Give us a call; we are here to help you.
