Business Tip of the Month

Business Tip
of the Month
For the month of
July 1999

Every business manager should have ABILity.

The first four letters of the word ability are: A for accountant, B for banker, I for insurance agent, and L for lawyer.

There are few financial transactions of any significance that should be completed without the professional assistance of at least one of these four disciplines. Make it a point to consult with these advisors while your transaction is still in the planning stage. It is almost impossible for any of these people to do a good job for you after a transaction is signed and sealed.

If you are concerned about confidentiality, discuss it at the outset of your meeting. Much of the general public is unaware of the ethical restrictions imposed on these people and are hesitant to involve them in preliminary planning.

The people in these four areas of business are in constant contact with business problems and solutions. If you discuss your ideas with them before you commit to something, you will find your time well spent. The fees you pay for legal, accounting, and other professional services at the preliminary planning stage will be returned to you in better multiples than those for "after-the-fact" consultation.

The more contact you have with your accountant, banker, insurance agent, and lawyer, the better equipped you will be to run your business more profitably and with fewer hassles. We often hear people say, "I wish I had known that before I did 'such-and-such.' " Even if you are acquainted with certain business transactions, things change. There are new laws being passed at an alarming rate; many of them may affect your business decisions.

Sometimes your inquiry may be only a brief telephone call. If your project warrants more time, your advisor will determine that and let you know what complexities you are facing.

We would be pleased to act as your sounding board in business and tax matters. In fact, if you would like to know more about the services we have available to you, call us; we are here to help you.
