Alloy Alert - Tax Filing Deadline Extension

The Internal Revenue Service and the New Jersey Division of Taxation recently announced they are extending the tax return filing deadline for individuals who reside or have businesses in the 12 counties in New Jersey that have been declared disaster areas. The new deadline to submit federal and state income tax returns is May 11, 2010. The 12 counties receiving the extension are Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union.
The new extension date applies to individuals, corporations, partnerships, sales tax, inheritance tax, estate tax, and other business taxes. The deadline for making income tax payments and 2009 contributions to individual retirement accounts (IRA) has also been extended to May 11, 2010. Estimated tax payments which have either an original or extended due date occurring on or after March 12 and on or before May 11 are due May 11 as well.
Taxpayers in the above counties will be automatically identified by the IRS and, therefore, do not need to indicate they are located in the covered disaster area.
