LOCAL CPA ADVISES STUDENTS ABOUT EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACCOUNTANTS

Accounting professionals are in demand and salaries are rising.   That's what students at Highland High School discovered on November 18 when Reynold P. Cicalese, CPA, PFS, visited to discuss career opportunities in accounting.    Cicalese is managing partner of Alloy, Silverstein, Shapiro, Adams, Mulford, Cicalese, Wilson & Co. of Cherry Hill, NJ, the Philadelphia region's 20th largest accounting firm.

The presentation was part of the statewide "Pay It Forward" program, initiated by the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), to alert students to the diverse range of rewarding career opportunities available to those who pursue an accounting degree.

During the month of November, more than 100 members of the NJSCPA went back to school to discuss careers in accounting with more than 5,000 students.

The new, more rigorous accounting standards mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and related legislation have contributed to an increased demand for accounting professionals.  The "Pay It Forward" program focused on the widespread recognition that accounting provides an ideal foundation for many business careers.  As old stereotypes have faded in recent years, the role of the accountant has changed dramatically.   Today, accounting is a fast-paced, dynamic profession.

The NJSCPA also operates New Jersey's largest professional scholarship fund.   In 2004, the NJSCPA Scholarship Fund awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships to 68 high school and college students to support their studies in accounting.   Highland High School students who attended the "Pay It Forward" presentation received scholarship application information.

The "Pay It Forward" presentations included videos that allowed students to learn about the rewarding career of a CPA, fun facts, and an overview of the range of career choices available after graduation.

In addition to the "Pay It Forward" campaign, NJSCPA members also are available to speak to student groups on financial literacy, a growing problem for many Americans, at any other time during the school year.   To learn more about the "Pay It Forward" program or how to schedule a presentation on financial literacy, visit www.njscpa.org/students/educators.cfm and click on "CPAs on the Move."  For more information on the NJSCPA Scholarship Programs, contact Jessica Gratt at the NJSCPA at 973.226.4494, ext. 241, or jgratt@njscpa.org, or visit the student section of the NJSCPA website at www.njscpa.org.
