Spotlight on Steven L. Shapiro, CPA, PFS

As part of our 40th Anniversary Celebration, we are spotlighting the founders of our firm. The founder we will focus on this quarter is Steven L. Shapiro. Born and raised in Camden, Steve resides in Cherry Hill with his wife of 36 years, Renee. They have two daughters, Stacy, who is a CPA with a Masters Degree in Finance from Wharton and Marci, who recently began working at Martha Stewart Living after receiving her Masters Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Syracuse University.
Steve began working part time at the firm in 1960 as a 19-year-old senior at Temple University. After graduation, he became a full-time employee and, with the exception of his stint in the Army, has continued to work at the firm. Steve became a partner in 1967 at the age of 26. In 1988, he passed a rigorous exam and earned certification as a Personal Financial Specialist (PFS), a prestigious and exclusive distinction shared by only 2,000 CPAs nationwide. Steve was one of the first in the country to receive this designation.
A diverse clientele has been represented by Steve over the years and has included companies and individuals from all walks of life, including professional athletes, physicians, dentists, attorneys, real estate operators and other professionals. He has lectured before the American Society of Appraisers and others on real estate investment and the tax implications thereof, as well as having been published in Barrons, The Philadelphia Business Journal and The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Steve has held Directorships at various financial institutions including Fidelity Bank of New Jersey, Howard Federal Savings and Loan, First Peoples Bank of New Jersey, Carnegie Bank and Jefferson Bank of New Jersey where he served as Vice Chairman of the Board. He has also served as a Commissioner of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and was appointed Treasurer of that Commission. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of SLM Financial Corporation (Sallie Mae), a $50 billion company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In that capacity, he is also Chairman of the Operating Committee and serves on the Executive, Compensation and Political Action Committees. He is also a member of the West Jersey Hospital Foundation Board and the Executive Advisory Council of Rutgers University.
Steve is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the NJ Society of CPAs (NJSCPA) and the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs (PICPA). He has also served on various committees of these professional associations including Cooperation Between CPAs and the IRS, Management Consulting Services, Legal Professional Liaison and Professional Development of CPAs. Currently, Steve holds the position of “Key Person” for both the AICPA and NJSCPA; his responsibilities include lobbying for tax change.
